EAST COAST - TRINCOMALEE
From April to October, the East Coast comes to life. It is one of the best stretches of beach in Sri Lanka. The Eastern beaches stretch for over 300 kilometers along which tourist resorts have developed in Nilaveli, 16 km. from Trincomalee and Kalkudah, 32 km. north of Batticaloa. The Trincomalee harbour described as the finest harbor in the world is a beautiful natural and had been in use from the days of the early Sinhala kings. Nilaveli is a prime beach resort in the East Coast. It is ideally suited for sun bathing, sea bathing and diving. A few meters off shore is a small rocky island good for snorkeling. Inland is a band of forest 70 KM wide. Wild elephants regularly roam the costal plains and there is a wide range of flora and bird life. The Lahugala, Yala East and Gal Oya National Parks, as well as the Kumana Bird Sanctuary, surround Arugam Bay. The area also has several lagoons with important and unique mangrove ecosystems. Arugam Bay has its own specific climate condition with very little rainfall and near perfect beach and sea conditions all year around. Surfers from all over the world have visited Arugam Bay, even during the last 20 years, when the area was a disputed region of the island's civil war, to experience this remote and idyllic surf point. The best time to visit is from April to September.
