POLONNARUWA

This becomes the capital after destruction of Anuradhapura in 993. Here also you can find many Buddhist sanctuaries and monuments exhibiting the excellent skills of art. Atadage, Nissanka Latha Mandapaya, Galviharaya and the ruins of the palace of great Sinhala king Parakramabahu I are few of those that one must not miss. There is clear evidence of Hindu religion and South Indian influence during Polonnaruwa era. It is a pleasant experience to view and drive pass or take a walk on the bunt of Parakrama Samudraya (one of the biggest man-made lakes) made by the King Parakramabahu the Great.
